Symmetrical Insects Collage

2nd grade lesson overview:

This project is a cross curricular lesson that ties with the second grade science unit on insects.  In art class, students learned about symmetry by studying insect anatomy.  Students discovered that symmetry is when two halves of an object or artwork mirror each other.  As a class we further studied the concept of symmetry by exploring insects.  During the class discussion, students applied their knowledge from the science unit to define what is an insect.  To complete this unit, students learned about the art technique of collaging.  Collage is a piece of art created by combining different pieces of paper.  For the summative assignment students created a symmetrical insect collage piece using construction paper, scissors, and glue.
