Library Experience
On top of having an art education experience, I have worked as a part-time elementary librarian. Through this experience I learned how to organize the library and create a welcoming space for students by using my artistic background to paint murals and create sculptures. When I first came to the Cologio Menor library in Ecuador, there were books that were recently purchased that were spread out all over the floor. I had never had prior library experience, but I quickly learned how to evolve the library into an organized system. I decorated the room by painting the walls, creating tissue paper puff balls to hang from the ceiling, putting quotes and book covers on the wall to create a warm, welcoming library.
As the librarian I held classes for students from first to sixth grade. I created a list of rules for the students to follow, to ensure that the library class is exciting and productive. I created lessons to adapt to each grade level. With the younger students, I read stories while asking questions to get the students engaged and participating. These activities helped students with writing, researching skills, and creative thinking. As an art teacher, I often incorporated small art projects into the readings which allowed students a better understanding of a story. I helped students with finding appropriate level reading for their age level that incorporated their interests. With this background of being a librarian, I now can confidently apply books into my future lessons in the art room.
